Lesser Litter, a successful zero waste shop in Taunton, Somerset

Zero Waste Week is from 2-6 September 2019 and at Greenscents we are delighted to be working with a growing number of zero waste shops who stock our 20 litre refills and Lesser Litter is one of them.

Here we talk to Kate Robertson about her shop and her views on living a zero waste lifestyle in readiness for Zero Waste Week.

Can you tell us a bit about your zero waste shop and what you offer?

We stock a range of groceries, packaging free, and environmentally friendly and natural alternatives for household goods. We sell by weight, so customers can buy as little or as much as they like, and fill and reuse their own containers (eliminating single use plastic and packaging).

What made you decide to open Lesser Litter?

We have always been conscious of waste. We attempt to buy ethically, locally and minimise packaging, and became frustrated that many everyday items were unavailable without plastic. We wanted to offer people in the area an alternative and more sustainable way of shopping.

Lesser Litter is run by Pete and Kate – this is them on the Opening Day
of their zero waste shop!

Why do you think it’s important that people move towards a zero waste lifestyle?

The planet cannot sustain our current levels of consumerism. Moving towards a zero waste lifestyle is something we, as individuals, can do to reduce the damage.

What are your top tips to help people on their journey to a more sustainable lifestyle?

Consider carefully how you spend your money. Your wallet is political power, and it can be used to vote green. Choose local and organic when and if possible. Before buying anything, consider if it is really needed, and consider buying second-hand.

Which are your most popular products in the shop?

Organic British cereals, British grown quinoa, fresh peanut butter from the mill, and obviously Greenscents cleaning products.

Of course, we know that you sell Greenscents products – can you tell us why you decided to stock Greenscents?

Greenscents ticks all of our boxes. It is a natural organic alternative to toxic products that is locally produced. We can sell to customers on-tap and we can send our containers back on a circular supply.

Zero Waste Week is next month – do you have anything planned?

Every week is zero waste week at the shop. Haha. We will be doing everything we can to help people reduce their footprint and waste.
