Myrtle & Maude: natural remedies for the pregnancy journey

Natural remedies for pregnancy

We were very interested to talk to Julia d’Albert, the founder of Myrtle & Maude. Her company is dedicated to helping pregnant mothers choose natural remedies during their pregnancy journey and is certified organic by The Soil Association like Greenscents.

Can you tell us a bit about your company?

Founded in Yorkshire, Myrtle & Maude creates natural products for pregnancy. Our mission is to support parents through those early days of pregnancy and beyond. We started 4 years ago firstly creating products to help ease morning sickness, we worked with a herbalist to produce an organic herbal blend and then expanded into a lactation and raspberry leaf tea. We have just launched a fertility and a folic acid supplement which is 98.9% natural.

How and why was Myrtle & Maude set up?

Myrtle & Maude was launched by my husband and I.

Both of us grew up intimately connected to the natural world around us; fresh allotment produce always decked our family table, and my mother, a retired nurse, would always find natural remedies to cure our ailments.

The actual idea to set up in the pregnancy industry was when I was selling travel acupressure wristbands for people who were suffering from travel sickness and I had pregnant ladies emailing asking me to send the wristbands asap as they were suffering badly from morning sickness. So this prompted me to look to see what was on the market and I was surprised to see there was not much to help women at this stage of pregnancy.

What do you think are the most important things women can do to look after themselves during pregnancy and protect the health of their baby?

Self-care, eat well and relax!

Why did you decide to have your products certified organic by The Soil Association?

We have a highly trained team in our nature labs who are specialist growers, pruners, pickers, blenders and everything in-between. We are proud of our craft and prefer to only source high-quality, natural ingredients. We want to make sure we provide our customers with the best of ingredients which are high quality and pesticide free. Our values are very much aligned with The Soil Association and proud to be part of their family.

Packaging is recyclable and low impact

As people are increasingly wanting to reduce their use of plastic, can you tell us about your packaging?

We make sure we have a low impact on the environment, so we use recyclable packaging.  Our vitamin bottles are glass and the outer packaging is card which is from suppliers who have FSC certification. We also use aluminium for some packaging – aluminium recycling means it can be reused in products after its initial production. We do use some PET for our food products which is recyclable, we are yet to source packaging that is not plastic which preserves the food, meets food standards and organic standards.

We have a responsibility to protect the environment and must act where we can. We also make sure we recycle at home and in the office.

Do you think it’s important that pregnant women and mothers choose organic laundry and cleaning products?

You want to give your baby the best start so picking products that are made from organically farmed ingredients which are not genetically modified or use herbicides or synthetic fertilisers is best.
