Meet Debbie from Tabitha Eve – making beautiful, reusable products for the home!

We always love meeting other brands with strong ethics like our own. One of our latest favourites is Tabitha Eve, who are passionate about creating ethically made items for the home that are not only beautiful but also reusable.

We had a lovely chat with Debbie the founder of Tabitha Eve to find out more about the brand, what inspires their products and their plans for the future.

What started your sustainability journey?

As a scuba diver, I’d come into direct contact with the plastic pollution in our oceans and was always very conscious of the need to make a difference.

Can you tell us a bit about your company and why you set it up?

I was on maternity leave from a career in finance and took up sewing as a hobby. I started making items designed to replace single-use or plastic products in my home. The ‘None Sponge’ – a plastic-free, washable dish sponge was the first of these and I gradually introduced others as I saw a need. Friends and family began asking me to make the same for them and encouraged me to open an online shop. It took off in ways I could never have expected and I took the decision to pursue the business full time…the rest is history.

Where did the name Tabitha Eve come from?

It’s my youngest daughter’s name!

Where does the inspiration come for your products?

Everyday life – it’s amazing how many mundane single-use products we get through on a daily basis and most of them are so easily replaced. Think of kitchen roll, cling film, cotton pads etc. I love sourcing new fabrics, too, which provide so much inspiration for potential new products.

Which products are the most popular? Do you have a favourite?

Our plastic-free, Reusable Make Up Rounds are our most popular product. They’re super soft and remove make up really well, plus they look just like the disposable kind except that you pop them in the laundry instead of the bin. Our ‘None Sponge’ (plastic-free washing up sponge) was the first product I made so this will always have a special place in my heart.

What is your top tip for someone who is looking to start reducing their waste?

Switch to reusables. There are so many great products out there and lots of them work in just the same way as their disposable counterparts – easy!

How do you reduce waste in your business?

Most of our products are designed based on fabric widths to reduce waste, and we offer our ‘imperfect products’ (those that we’ve sewn a little bit wonky) for sale rather than sending to landfill.

How have you seen people’s attitudes to sustainable products change over the last 5 years?

I think more and more people are looking to make changes in their daily lives and show willingness to try new things for the sake of the planet. I’ve been really lucky that my business began as attitudes were changing. It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone (including us) with some more difficult times ahead so I really hope we don’t take our eye off the ball when it comes to sustainability and I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure our products remain viable for our customers.

What are your plans for 2022?

Now that we’re allowed out and about again I’m really looking forward to lots of trade shows and retail shows where we get to meet our customers in person!
